Overview

About the Tamor trip

The Tamor is the easternmost serious rafting river in Nepal, draining off Kanchenjunga and feeding into the Sun Koshi system. It's also the only river-based fishing trip in Nepal that includes a real approach trek — three days of walking from Taplejung down to the put-in at Dobhan, with views of Kanchenjunga on clear mornings. After that it's six days on the river: continuous Class III–IV whitewater with smaller fishing windows.

The fishing here is different from the western rivers. Mahseer are present but smaller; Asala (Snow Trout) and other native species feature more prominently. The water is less explored — fewer companies run trips here, the catch records are thinner, and the experience feels more pioneering. The take-out at Tribeni — where the Tamor, Arun, and Sun Koshi converge to form the Saptakoshi — is one of the most sacred spots in Hindu Nepal.

This trip is for travelers who want more than just fishing. The trek gives you mountain views and altitude (camps around 1,900–2,400 m); the rafting gives you continuous whitewater; and the fishing fills the calmer days. It's not the trip for anglers chasing trophy Mahseer — but if you want a complete eastern Himalayan experience with rod time built in, the Tamor is unmatched.

Common questions

Questions about the Tamor

The trek is moderate — three days of mostly descending from Taplejung (1,820 m) to the river at around 600 m. Daily walking is 4–6 hours. You don't need to be a trekking veteran, but you should be comfortable on uneven ground and able to carry a daypack. Porters carry the camping gear and main bags.
