Overview

About the Budhi Gandaki trip

The Budhi Gandaki is the underrated central Nepal fishing river. Born off the eastern slopes of Manaslu and Ganesh Himal, it flows through the Gorkha district and joins the Trishuli at Benighat. The water is cold, clear, and high in dissolved oxygen — perfect for Snow Trout and resident Mahseer. The fishing is varied: deep pools hold larger Mahseer, faster runs hold Snow Trout and Asala, and pockets along the bank hold freshwater eel and catfish.

What makes this trip stand out is access. You don't need a flight; you don't need long transfers. A 3–4 hour drive from Kathmandu gets you to Arughat or Seti Beni, where the fishing starts. Three nights on the river is enough for proper fishing time — morning sessions before breakfast, afternoon rafting between holds, evening sessions before dinner. Then a half-day drive back to Kathmandu.

We recommend this trip for anglers with limited time, anyone who's already done the western expeditions and wants a different river, and travelers who want fishing as one part of a wider Nepal trip. The trip pairs naturally with a Gorkha Durbar visit on the way out, or a Manakamana cable car visit on the way back. It's the most flexible fishing trip we offer.

Common questions

Questions about the Budhi Gandaki

The Budhi Gandaki has cleaner water, more diverse fishing (Snow Trout in addition to Mahseer), and more wilderness feel — fewer roads visible from the river. The Trishuli is shorter, more accessible, and better for half-day visits. Choose Budhi Gandaki for a real multi-day fishing escape with mountain views; choose Trishuli for a quick weekend.
