If there's one question we hear more than any other, it's this: when is the best time to fish Mahseer in Nepal? The short answer: spring (March–May) and autumn (October–November). But the full answer depends on which river you fish, the weather that year, and what kind of experience you're after. Here's everything you need to know to pick the right window.
Nepal's Two Fishing Windows
Nepal's fishing calendar is shaped by the monsoon. From June through August, heavy rains swell the rivers, muddy the water, and make fishing nearly impossible on most major rivers. That leaves two prime windows on either side of the monsoon — and each has its own character.
Spring (March – May)
Water is clear from winter runoff, temperatures rise, and Mahseer become aggressively active as they prepare to spawn. This is the best time for sight fishing and surface action. Days are warm, nights still cool in the mountains.
Autumn (October – November)
Post-monsoon, rivers settle quickly into crystal-clear conditions. Fish are feeding heavily before winter. Weather is stable, skies are blue, and the Himalayan views are at their most spectacular. This is peak season for many anglers.
Month-by-Month Breakdown
Every month within the fishing season has a slightly different feel. Here's how to think about it:
- February: Early spring window opens on Sunkoshi. Water still cold, but fish are starting to move.
- March: Prime season kicks off. All major rivers fishable. Expect rising temperatures and great sight fishing.
- April: Arguably the peak month. Strong feeding behavior, warm days, comfortable evenings.
- May: Late spring. Still excellent fishing, but heat can be intense in the lowlands. Monsoon arrives at month-end.
- June–August: Off-season. Monsoon. Rivers unfishable for most of Nepal.
- September: Monsoon ends. Rivers start clearing. Best fishing usually begins in the second half of the month.
- October: Another peak month. Clear water, stable weather, active fish.
- November: Excellent fishing continues. Cooler air, smaller crowds, magical light on the water.
- December–January: Winter window. Fishing possible on warmer rivers but action slows.
Our recommendation for first-time visitors
If you've never fished Nepal before, aim for mid-October to mid-November. Weather is reliable, water is clear, fish are active, and the Himalayan views at this time of year are worth the trip even if you don't catch a thing.
